Hundreds of Stalls Reduced to Ashes; Investigation Ordered Into One of Islamabad's Biggest Market Fires

A routine day of business in the busy H-9 Weekly Bazaar in Islamabad turned into a scene of destruction as a massive fire engulfed hundreds of stalls, leaving traders with losses worth millions and raising fresh concerns about fire safety standards in public markets.

The blaze broke out at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday and quickly engulfed a large portion of the market before rescue teams launched a massive firefighting operation. The authorities managed to bring the fire under control after several hours. However, the damage left behind has led the Islamabad administration to order a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Hundreds of Businesses Affected

More than 380 stalls were affected, rescue officials said, with shoe and clothing vendors suffering the biggest losses. Initial estimates put the financial losses at close to Rs. 120 million but officials expect the final tally to be higher as assessments continue.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as fire raced through the market, destroying merchandise and temporary structures before emergency responders arrived on the scene.

Rescue Teams Battle Blaze for Hours
Firefighters and rescue workers responded soon after the outbreak and battled for nearly three hours to contain the flames. "The cooling process was later completed, officials said, and there were no hidden hotspots to reignite the fire.

The fire was quickly contained and did not spread to the surroundings but much of the bazaar was destroyed.

Government Orders Top-Level Probe
Following the incident, the Office of the District Magistrate, Islamabad Capital Territory formed a special inquiry committee to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the emergency response.

The committee will be headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and will include representatives from various departments including:

  • Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI)
  • Islamabad Police
  • Civil Defence
  • Capital Development Authority (CDA)
  • Other relevant government agencies

Authorities have directed the committee to submit its findings within three days.

Market Safety: Growing Concerns
H-9 Weekly Bazaar is one of the busiest commercial centres in Islamabad, which draws thousands of shoppers and vendors every week. Once again the scale of this fire has brought to the fore issues related to fire prevention mechanisms, emergency exits, electrical safety and disaster preparedness in densely populated markets.

In Pakistan, market fires have exposed vulnerabilities in commercial areas on several occasions in the past few years, causing huge economic losses to the small business owners who rely on daily sales for their livelihood.

Next Steps?
As investigators get to work, affected traders are looking for answers – and possible compensation for their losses. The findings of the inquiry committee could influence the future safety policies for markets in Islamabad and elsewhere in the country.

For now, the main goal is to determine how the fire started, if it could have been avoided and what has to be done to prevent such a disaster in the future.

The H-9 Bazaar incident is not just another bazaar incident; it is a grim reminder of the importance of enforcing fire safety in public commercial spaces. Hundreds of livelihoods are at stake, and millions have been lost and traders, authorities and citizens alike will be watching the findings of the inquiry closely.
