As part of the ongoing Hafta-e-Shahadat commemorations marking the 35th assassination anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar organised a special day-long programme featuring Qur’an Khwani, a congregational prayer meet, and a grand Qur’an recitation competition at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Farooq was assassinated on May 21, 1990 at his Nigeen residence. More than 30 leading Islamic seminaries from across Kashmir, including remote regions, participated in the event, which saw dozens of young Qaris displaying their recitation skills before a packed gathering of religious scholars, imams and members of the public.
The programme was presided over by Anjuman Auqaf Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who in his address paid tribute to his slain father and predecessor, whose legacy, he said, continues to inspire Kashmir’s religious and social conscience. Mirwaiz said the event was organised not only to honour the memory of the slain leader but also to instil among the younger generation a deep attachment to the Qur’an and its teachings.
