Sikhs burn effigies of Modi, Indian envoy in Canada during protest Breaking

October 27, 2026

Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) activists burned effigies of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik in Canada.  The protest took place in Surrey, British Columbia, on October 25. The activists linked their demonstration to the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and threats against Khalistan referendum organisers.  SFJ said activists Manjinder Singh and Narinder Singh Randhawa participated in the protest. Both reportedly received “duty to warn” notices from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) concerning threats to their lives.

The group also cited alleged assassination plots targeting referendum organiser Inderjeet Singh Gosal. It raised concerns about alleged Indian interference, surveillance and transnational repression in Canada.  Nijjar was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey on June 18, 2023. Canadian authorities have investigated alleged links between Indian government agents and violence targeting Sikh activists. India has denied involvement in alleged plots against Sikh activists.  The protest comes amid continuing tensions over the Khalistan movement and India-Canada relations. KMS-9K
