Pakistan's Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, addressed the 12th Meeting of Ministers of Transport of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States held in Tianjin, China, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to strengthening regional connectivity, trade, and transport cooperation.
In his remarks, Khan highlighted Pakistan's progress in road infrastructure, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), according to a report carried by Gwadar Pro on Thursday. He noted the completion of the country's north-south transport link from Gwadar to Karachi and Khunjerab Pass, emphasizing that both Karachi and Gwadar ports are now operating at international standards, offering significant potential for regional trade integration.
The minister stressed the importance of expanding trade corridors with Afghanistan and Iran, calling them "potential lifelines for economic stability." He stated that Pakistan fully supports China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), describing it as a "transformative force for regional cooperation." Khan also shared that Pakistan is rapidly transitioning towards smart transport solutions and is actively working on the digitalization of its transport systems.
He added that "visa on arrival facilities are now available for citizens of 126 countries, reflecting Pakistan’s openness and commitment to regional tourism and trade." He emphasised that "transport is not just a means of travel, but a tool for mutual development and prosperity," and that "connectivity lies at the heart of sustainable regional growth." He further stated that Pakistan is working on creating a network of integrated transport systems with SCO countries, anchored in mutual trust and cooperation.
Reiterating Pakistan's strong engagement with the SCO since becoming a full member in 2017, Khan assured the forum of Pakistan's full implementation of all decisions made at the SCO platform. He concluded by saying, "The path to regional development lies in enhanced cooperation—and SCO remains the most vital platform to achieve it."
