Chairman Senate,Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Saturday stressed the early completion and expansion of the modern cancer center at Nishtar Hospital, terming it a major step toward improved healthcare in South Punjab. He expressed these views during a meeting with Dr.Atiq Anwar Khan,Head of Oncology at Nishtar Hospital and eye specialist Dr.Ilyas Sandhila. The meeting reviewed progress, facilities and future expansion plans of the under-construction cancer center. It was highlighted that Gilani,during his tenure as Prime Minister in 2010,had laid the foundation for the project to provide advanced cancer treatment facilities to patients in South Punjab.
The initiative,backed by the Punjab government, is now nearing completion. Gilani said that the state-of-the-art facility would serve as a ray of hope for millions in the region,reaffirming his commitment to ensuring access to quality healthcare at people’s doorsteps.The cancer center will have more than 100 beds and offer comprehensive services including diagnosis, treatment and patient care under one roof. A key feature of the project was the installation of a modern PET Scan machine,the first of its kind in Punjab.
Highlighting the rising number of cancer cases,Gilani emphasized the need to further strengthen radiotherapy services. He proposed the addition of another linear accelerator to ensure timely and effective treatment. He also recommended the installation of advanced technologies such as the CyberKnife system to provide international-standard treatment in Multan,reducing the need for patients to travel to other major cities.
