The Meteorological Department has warned that temperatures in Sindh could rise as high as 50 degrees Celsius as a strong heatwave is expected to intensify across the province in the coming days. The weather advisory said that a high-pressure system present over upper atmospheric levels is likely to strengthen further from tomorrow, leading to a prolonged spell of moderate to severe heatwave conditions across most districts of Sindh until May 31.
The officials have advised citizens, especially children, women, and elderly people, to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. Farmers have also been urged to manage crops and livestock carefully in line with changing weather conditions. The department forecast that several districts, including Sukkur, Larkana, and Dadu, may experience extreme temperatures ranging between 47°C and 50°C during the heatwave period. In other areas such as Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, and Jamshoro, temperatures are expected to remain between 44°C and 47°C.
The Met Office further cautioned that electricity demand may increase significantly during the heatwave, urging residents to avoid unnecessary power consumption to help reduce strain on the power supply system. Meanwhile, in Karachi, temperatures are expected to remain relatively lower, with forecasts suggesting 34°C to 36°C on Monday and Tuesday, and rising to 35°C to 37°C on Wednesday. Southwesterly sea breezes are likely to continue during the early part of the week, providing some relief to the coastal city.
