Twin cities' largest cattle market at Bhatta Chowk has started gaining momentum as Eid-ul-Azha draws closer, with increasing activity of traders and buyers across RawalpindiandIslamabad. Traders from far-flung areas have brought a variety of healthy and well-groomed sacrificial animals, adding to the vibrancy of the market. The market presents colourful scenes, with large and strong bulls on display at some spots, while goats and sheep of different breeds are attracting buyers at others.
Citizens are visiting the market along with their families, where selection of animals, bargaining and purchasing activities are continuing throughout the day. Talking to APP, a buyer Yasir said he had come with his family to find a suitable animal and was satisfied with the variety available, though prices were slightly higher this year. Another citizen, Amir, said that he was visiting different markets to compare prices and quality before making a final purchase, adding that arrangements at Bhatta Chowk were better than previous years.
A cattle trader, Habib, informed that traders had brought animals from different areas of the country and were hopeful of good business in the coming days as the rush increases closer to Eid. The Rawalpindi Cantonment board (RCB), being administrative body of the market has made arrangements on around an area of 25 acres, to facilitate both traders and visitors by providing water, electricity and medical services at the market.
"We are regularly monitoring the market activities here, our staff is deployed in the mandi to maintain its standard", said an RCB official. Officials said cleanliness, security and animal care measures had also been ensured to provide a safe and comfortable environment for buyers. Eid-ul-Azha, besides being a religious obligation, reflects the spirit of sacrifice and devotion, and the festive atmosphere at cattle markets across Rawalpindi is a manifestation of these sentiments.
