The Sindh government has launched a monsoon and flood monitoring system under its Monsoon Contingency Plan 2026, reinforcing its preparedness to track rainfall, river flows and potential flood risks across the province throughout the monsoon season.

According to official documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the plan has been approved by the secretary of the irrigation department and is being implemented throughout the province as part of the annual flood management strategy.

The document states that the irrigation department prepares and issues a comprehensive contingency plan every year before the onset of the monsoon season to ensure timely coordination and an effective response to potential flooding.

As part of the plan, the irrigation department established a Monsoon and Flood Monitoring Cell in the office of the Director, Regulation, Karachi, on July 1, 2026. The monitoring cell operates round the clock for the entire monsoon season to provide continuous oversight of evolving weather and hydrological conditions.

The monitoring system has been tasked with tracking prevailing monsoon conditions, monitoring rainfall, assessing flood situations, supervising river flows and water discharges, and reviewing hydrological developments across Sindh.

The centralised mechanism will help facilitate quicker decision-making and improve coordination among field formations during emergencies.

The contingency framework forms part of Sindh's broader flood management arrangements to enhance disaster preparedness and minimise the impact of heavy rains and flooding through real-time monitoring and timely dissemination of information.

The document underscores that the institutional framework is intended to strengthen operational readiness and ensure that relevant authorities remain equipped to respond effectively to any flood-related emergencies during the 2026 monsoon season.
