14 Children Killed in Lahore Tuition Center Roof Collapse: What Went Wrong and Why It Raises Serious Safety QuestionsBreaking

July 01, 2026

Fourteen children lost their lives after a roof collapsed at a tuition center in Lahore's Kahna area. Here's what happened, why the building failed, and the investigation underway.

A Routine Day Turned Into a Nightmare

It was a typical day of learning that turned into one of the deadliest building tragedies involving school-age children in Lahore.

LAHORE – At least 14 children aged between 5 to 13 years were killed and several others were injured including a teacher when a roof caved in at a private tuition center in Kahna Nau area of Lahore. Rescue workers combed through the rubble for hours before calling off the operation.

Once again, the tragedy has thrown up urgent questions on the safety of informal educational institutions operating out of residential buildings.

How the Lahore Roof Collapse Happened

Early reports indicate that the tuition centre was housed in a one-story residential building in Kahna Nau, a suburb of Lahore.

Authorities believe that construction work nearby caused the structure to deteriorate and the supporting girders to collapse before the roof fell in suddenly. Concrete and debris fell on the classroom, giving students little or no time to escape.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene and dragged out some 20 survivors, who were rushed to neighbouring hospitals for treatment.
Doctors at THQ Kahna Hospital confirmed that 14 children had died in the collapse.

In the incident, one teacher sustained injuries and some students who were injured are still undergoing medical treatment. Families gathered outside hospitals and the disaster site, anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones.

Five people have been arrested by the Punjab Police, including the tuition centre owner and a contractor, as investigators examine whether negligence was behind the tragedy.

Further arrests could follow depending on what the investigation finds.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif termed the incident as a heart-rending tragedy and condoled with the families of the affected people.

She called for a transparent investigation by the authorities and assured that those found responsible would be held accountable.

Political leaders across Pakistan expressed their grief and called for the stricter enforcement of building safety regulations.

Why It Was Significant

The tragedy in Lahore is symptomatic of a bigger problem in many cities of Pakistan.

Thousands of tuition centers and coaching academies and private schools are being run out of converted residential buildings. Most of them are without proper structural inspection, emergency exits and safety standards.

Experts say stopping such disasters from happening again will mean frequent inspections and tighter enforcement of building laws.

Investigators are expected to release a detailed report after assessing the structural condition of the building and the effect of nearby construction activities.

Officials may also expand inspections of private tuition centres across Punjab to identify unsafe buildings.

But for the families involved, no investigation can erase the tragic loss of young lives.
The collapse of a tuition centre roof in Lahore isn’t just an isolated accident, it’s a grim reminder of what happens when building safety is ignored. The focus will continue to be on assigning responsibility and ensuring stronger safeguards to protect students in educational institutions across the country as the investigations continue.
