Petrol Prices Rise Again, Public shows anger and frustrationBreaking

February 16, 2026

The federal government has once again raised fuel prices in Pakistan, delivering a fresh blow to inflation. Late on Sunday, the Petroleum Division issued a notification confirming that the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been increased by Rs 7.32 per litre, while petrol has gone up by Rs 5 per litre for the next 15 days. These revised rates came into effect from February 16, 2026, based on recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and movements in international market prices.

Under the new pricing structure, HSD is now fixed at Rs 275.70 per litre, up from Rs 268.38, and petrol has been set at Rs 258.17 per litre. This fortnightly pricing revision is part of the government’s routine review in line with global crude oil trends, exchange rate fluctuations, and regulatory guidance. Experts warn that increases in diesel prices are particularly impactful because this fuel is widely used in heavy transport, agriculture, and logistics, which often leads to higher costs for basic goods and services as freight charges rise.

The latest fuel hike has triggered strong reactions among the public, especially as Pakistan approaches the holy month of Ramazan, when household expenses traditionally rise. Many citizens have taken to social media to express their frustration, pointing out that while global oil prices are currently lower than in previous years, fuel costs continue to climb domestically. Some users criticised the government’s reliance on fuel levies and taxes as a revenue source, arguing that the burden falls disproportionately on ordinary people struggling with the rising cost of living.

People on social media criticises Government, with users sarcastically dubbing the price jump as a “Ramadan blessing” and questioning the fairness of increasing fuel costs when other economic pressures remain high.

As diesel and petrol prices remain elevated for the coming two weeks, transport operators, farmers, and daily commuters are looking forward for the food prices and overall inflation. With fuel adjustments continuing to be a regular feature of the fortnightly reviews, many Pakistanis are calling for greater transparency and relief measures to ease the financial strain on households across the country.
